So hungry! and yet, so lazy...
On the weekends at Dovetail Bakery on 31st and Alberta you can get delicious vegan biscuits and gravy with smoked tempeh, alas it is not the weekend. Oh-also when you go there be sure to get the "Aunt Miriam sticky bun". It's lovely.
My non vegan boyfriend and I agree the biscuits and gravy here are better than most of the biscuits in gravy we've had all over town. So regardless of your interest in dairy and meat you will be smart to check it out. and by smart I mean your mouth will be happy.
I ate out a lot recently because of the laziness and busy-ness (final at school, looking for new job, etc) and mostly I ate lackluster food. Biscuits and gravy from Pine State with hashbrowns was decent but not amazing. Blargh, I need a new restaurant to try out, I'm bored with the rest of them, even the ones I love. Ok, maybe not bored-but not as interested in going when I want something new to try.
A few different weekends have led to fantastic brunches at Simpatica. Their waffle smothered in whip cream is a must if you are into that sort of thing (and for the record over at Tasty they have really been skimping on the whip cream n the french toast orders. they didn't used to but now you just get a small dollop...) Like Tasty they are meat heavy but it is still possible to get a scrumptious meat free meal. The only complaint I have about this place is one of the waitresses who we happened to have had three times, she is not perceptive, doesn't wait on us in a timely fashion and seems more suited to being a hostess/front of the room person vs a server. i was overjoyed when we didn't get her again last time we went. That way we actually got water and coffee refills and were able to put our orders in quickly.

I told you so.
Soooo, last post was April 24th when I declared Tasty 'n' Sons to be delicious and well worth your time(in very few words-a novelty for me!). Since then? They were voted Best Restaurant of the Year! Can I just say I know what I'm talking about when it comes to good food? Yes, yes I can.
Also since then Tasty has expanded from brunch 9-3 to add happy hour and dinner, so you can fill up on brunch all day or try something different like one of their 3 burgers. I have had all of them and they are all scrumptious.
The first time I went for dinner I got an entree and though the quality of the food was good I would have to say for the price and the portion I got I wasn't too thrilled, and still hungry afterward. I ordered the pork loin with spaetzle and my dining companion ordered the steak and frites. His dinner was $15, mine was $14. His steak was almost double the size of my pork loin for one more dollar!?!? We've gone back a few times-we stick to the burgers now!-and we've noticed the steak is now $18...But we don't care because for $9 you get a damn -wait for it-tasty burger and fries. Its hard to consider the other items when I know one of the burgers is all I need. Is it healthy? Hell no, unless you want to count quality beef as healthy...But it's sourced local, like everything there, and it is mouth watering...and it's nine bucks!!!
Your best bet is still to go for the brunch but at this point the weekend wait can be insane-we were told an hour the other week when we stopped in, we went elsewhere. I don't care how good your food is-I don't wait an hour to get a table, especially if I am hungry and should have dined before I finally managed to get myself out of the house. You know how weekends go; you try to sleep in, you plod around a bit, you grudgingly walk the dogs in your sweats, you sip some coffee, you maybe take a shower and get dressed, then you get an espresso, and THEN you see about brekky at your fave neighborhood joint. And if they tell you there is an hour wait you thank them and take your consumer dollar elsewhere.
I can't count how many times I've gone to Tasty now-I went there for my birthday brunch, I have gone three-five times for dinner. Once I went three times in a week, maybe four(that was my second week, when I was so enamored and wanted to try as many things as quickly as possible as my stomach would allow). A few times I have gotten special treats on the house-the chocolate doughnut with its delicious sauce, limoncello(delightful!). I took my mother there for Mother's Day. Basically it has become my "go to" spot. If for some reason anyone in Portland reading this hasn't been there yet just go. For those of you who don't mind waiting-first get your name on the list-then wander down the street to get your espresso or coffee needs met by Ristretto Roaster owned by Din Johnson. Ristretto and Heart have my vote for best coffee in town-followed by Stumptown (and maybe Water Ave,I am just trying them out this week for the first time so we'll see).
Thank you John Gorham for doing what you do and doing it well.

The last post I made was in July and I stated how hot it was, and here it is November and the weather is cold, cold, cold. Wool sweater time, indeed. I also stated hos I am a bad blogger for not updating and obviously I then forgot to remember to update for 4 months. Silly rabbit, blogging is for people with...more time on their hands?
Tonight I am goingt o return to Apizza Scholls, which you should have heard of by now, as it is hailed as one of "the" pizza joints in the fair city of roses. I think I have only successfully dined here one time, as it was either packed or they had run out of dough on previous attempts. Anyhow it has been years since I've been back, only due to it being in upper SE (usepo?), and my infamous redheaded impatience. In other words, I don't like to wait for things, but you know what they say...good things come to those who wait. The only pizza I've ate as of late has been from Pizza A Go Go, which is all fine and good but it isn't that fantastic, and I want to prove this point to my feller. Or rather, I want to share with him my knowledge of where the really good food places(aka restaurants ) are. Also, I tend to prefer to just make pizza vs. spending $20+ on it, but let's be honest, pizza done right in a wood stove or just any really really hot oven intended for making pizza is better than what I am going to achieve in my kitchen.
Today all I have ingested so far had been 2 double americanos and one ham and cheese croissant, the first espresso and croissant came from Ristetto Roasters, the north location, and it was lovely of course,as per usual. However I will say that riding to PSU whilst drinking your coffee on your cross bike is not altogether an enjoyable experience at 9:30 am. Waiting for class to end to eat your croissant is also not the best. But it tasted good.
On Sunday I went to breakfast with the man over on 30th and Killingsworth at Fats, a british inspired pub/eatery. I ordered the eggs benedict that was served not on an English muffin but rather a piece of como bread. I was a bit incredulous about this fact, but it wound up being good so I couldn't be too upset about it. It was a bit tough to cut as I was served merely a butter knife and not anything with a sharp edge but other than that, the one blonde hair I found right off the bat, and the fact that my water was never refilled I felt fine with my breakfast. My dining partner seemed to enjoy his scones and gravy but the coffee was horrible which he confided to me when we were free from the confines of the pub, which I had suspected from the look of it. The bathroom was smelly and not very clean looking as well, surely meant to be like an actual English pub wc, but frankly it was kind of creepy. The kind of space you can easily picture one shooting up in, having tawdry bar sex in, or just pissing on the floor and walking away. It was small, had an overflowing wastebasket(we were the first customers when they opened at 10 am)and as mentioned didn't smell so fresh.
Despite all of that I would go back some day for more brekky, or maybe just a beer, but not necessarily anytime soon as there are many more eateries I want to check out.

I am such a bad blogger, I don't update with any regularity, but you know what? I'm ok with that.
Yesterday's food intake included:
a cup of home brewed coffee at work
a cup of orange juice
an everything bagel toasted with butter
a 12 oz double Americano-from coffeehouse 5 on k-worth and albina
2 quesadillas-one with tomato and nectarine and cheese, one with just cheese, a scant amount of salsa to dip said quesadillas into
1/4 a banana
the remainder of the nectarine
glass after glass of water-it was freaking hot!
a 16 oz. chocolate milkshake(yum!)-from piedmont deli, located next door to the florida room
2 Hub IPA's
the "weeping tiger" sandwhich-tofu cutlets, avacado, hot sauce, something else that I am forgetting, with a side of black eyed peas-from the Bye and Bye
the sandwhich and the peas were pretty spicy.
The service at the b and b is crap. Everytime I go there I think this, and declare I am not going back. I met Kayla there at 9 last night, a Thursday, and it was packed ot the gills. kayla was seated outside at a picnic table with 2 guys I didn't recognize and when I asked her who they were she explained she was just sitting at their table cos there was no other available spot. By the time I got a beer from the bar they had left so we had our own table for a few minutes before the door man came around announcing that the front patio was shutting down in 10 minutes.
To be fair I did go there on Monday night with Rob, for one beer and it wasn't as bad as it was last night, or other times I've been there but the majority of my experiences as a patron hav ebeen negative. The bartenders ignore you for as long as possible, people apparently do not understand how to queu up, even if you are just trying to close your tab out it takes 5 or more minutes to get th ebartenders attention. When you finally get noticed you are not gretted with any sort of Hey Hows it going but are just demanded to give your order. I tried to tell my bartender where I would be seated for my sandwhich order adn he just barked at me to take my number with me. I understand the system, man, but with such a huge crowd it seemed obvious that it'd be helpful to say where I'd be.
It's probably more calm at happy hour or before, but for as many times as I've gone there since it opened I am not impressed with the scene there. People rave abou tthe food as well and seriosuly? I have tried several of the all vegan menu items and though some of them are good, none of them are anything to write home about. The best thing they have is probably "the meatball sub"on their late night menu and even that is something you could make at home super easily-and way cheaper.
so I guess this is good- bye and bye...
I want to check out the Radio Room, and have wanted to since it opened, but anyone I suggest this too seems too put off by what they think of as "too posh" or whatever. As someone who is interested in seeing what is out there I find it a bit ridiculous to scoff at a place if you haven't tried it. So, next time I feel the need to grab a drink on Alberta it will be there, and not at the Bye and Bye.
I am now going to go make a smoothie for breakfast.

cereal this morning after a glass of water, ahh the excitement.
yesterday i only ate a bagel-sesame- toasted with butter, an apricot mango soygurt, some coffee and lots of beer(being at the polo tourney with a free keg will do that) so i'm feeling that this morning...due to my arm being hurt i hadn't done the dishes from friday night yet and when i returned from the tourney last night i was greeted with the lovely sight of an empty sink and a fully packed dish drainer. hurray for my roommate steve!
saturday i had a berry soygurt, a breakfast burrito, a sip of coffee, lots of beer, mac n cheese leftovers, cucumber and pineapple, a roll with peanut butter and jelly. i was on top of food intake and was relatively calm for most of the day. then with some sudden burst of energy i decided to run off the court, slipped, fell hard on my arm and that was the end of my night. my arm is felling a bit better this morning and the bruising is beginning. i suspect it will be quite a good one...
friday night we had a small dinner at my house-kayla, jeff and i were the only ones in attendance. i made mac n cheese, kayla made a tasty salad that had apples and avacado in it-a nice addition, and jeff brought icecream for dessert. we also had smoothies, water and some cab sauv. then we went to the polo party and had a lot of beer(surprise!). earlier i shared lunch from pok pok with kaiden-we had sticky rice and pork skewers with a delicious peanut sauce. i also had my leftover slice of pizza that i made the night before-olive oil(no red sauce),mozzarella, tomato, basil, mushrooms=yum.
thursday i woke up had some eggs and bacon in an english muffin, some oj and water and then headed over to collect jeff for a bike ride. we went out to sauvie's with the plan of doing the loop twice, maybe, but instead we went to the beach further down the road, hung out for a bit and then rode back, i snacked on a piece of bacon i had brought, and a bar-i think it had acai in it. i grabbed a v8 from ther little store/cafe before we headed back to complete the loop. back at jeff's i had more water, a couple strawberries and a few cherries.we checked the mileage on the computer and discovered we'd rode about 40 miles, and by the time i got home i would have 45 under my belt, not too shabby. his sister had made shortcakes and i felt semi inspired to do the same when i got home but instead i made the pizza. i met up with brittney for happy hour at moloko(?) on mississippi and had two beers before i returned a chez moi and got to eat my pizza.
