I made a frickin delicious lasgana last night! it had a store bought organic marinara and herb sauce enhanced by a coupele fresh tomatoes and an onion, and zuchhini bit, then there was spinach and mushrooms and carrot and garlic layered inbetween mozzarella and ricotta. mmm mmm mmm.
Mike(polo mike) brought a baguette to dip in some olive oil and balsamic vinegar as we waited for it to finish baking.
I also made a lasagna last week but I liked this one better.
I made nachos with Jennifer on Tuesday night and she supplied some Ebenezer brews, and we watched "Lars and the Real Girl", it was a pretty good movie. Bizarre, but good.

Kentucky Fried

Sooo, I went to Kentucky a few weeks ago to see Will Oldham perform. After being introduced to his music by Ben a few years ago(coming up on three?wow, where'd the time go?)I quickly found that he has become one of my favorite current musicians. He hasn't performed in Portland since I knew who he was and when I saw that he'd be doing a benefit for Save Kentucky's Hemlocks I knew I had to go. I never had any desire to go to Kentucky in my life and I'll admit I was slightly wary but I thought 'fuck it! Kentucky or bust!' and I booked myself a ticket for a mini adventure. I wish I could have afforded to take more than a 3 day vacation, but alas it was not possible as people depend on me to watch their lil chilluns.
I had a lot of fun and there is a possibility that one day in the future I may return to the land of Bourbon, but not any time soon. You hear about Lexington being the "horse capitol of the world" but once you get there they don't appear to have any horses. I was almost certain it was all a hoax, until a Kentucky native made an extra effort to find some horses along the side of the highway to point out to me. So, its true they do have horses there, but they mostly have high falootin horses that are all shacked up in a barn. Pfft. Horse country, indeed!
This however is not a blog about horses, but rather about food so lets get to it.(I am aware that some people do in fact dine on the equine, but I think that's pretty horrible, I won't eat rabbit and I won't eat horse).
The main institution of note that I ate at(kind of-I think I only managed to complete about half of my meal)was...The Wafflehouse. Oh boy. The food was not good, that much should be obvious, we're talking Denny's mixed with ? sumthin, but the experience was admittedly fun. My breakfast companion and I had some witty exchanges with the waitress and cook, so that was a bonus. I can't even recall what I ordered, some sort of egg creation with mushrooms and cheese that came with toast. We had some diner coffee. I feel any fantasy of truck stop dining was achieved with this experience...it was even located next door to a gas station. Oh, America! Bestill my beating heart.
After breakfast on Saturday I needed to get some real coffee so we headed to this nice lil cafe back in town adn I got a 12 oz double Americano, it tasted right, even if it wasn't Stumptown. Good to know I am not totally ruined by the Portland coffee experience.
I had a slice of pecan pie in a refridgerator that needed rescueing and it was consumed on the road later that evening-it was delicious! It came from Missy's Pies, located within the confines of Ramseys, and if you ever make it to Lexington I suggest you try some of that pie. I had dined at Ramseys for a late lunch/supper on Friday night before heading off to the concert. I got meatloaf with sides of greens, creamed corn, and mashed potatoes. It was a lot of food and I wound up having to take some of it to go. I also had a scrumptious chocolate milk shake. The dining situation itself was a little marred because the waitress seated me in th eback section-where there was no people watching to be had cos I was th eonly one back there. But I did get to overhear some of the cooks back in the kitchen and that was semi amusing. The food was good and the prices were fine. I think everyone in Kentucky knows about Ramseys but incase you've never heard of it and you go for a visit you should hit it up for some "homestyle" cooking.
Friday morning, when I first got into town, with very little sleep and lots of bourbon running through my viens from a brief Thursday night stay in Louisville I stumbled around the downtown looking for some place to eat. I finally found a place called Alfafa's and it is very much like The Vita or some such place in Portland. Not only did I get breakfast(I think I got biscuits'n'gravy which was so so. The biscuits were good but the gravy wasn't so hot)but my waitress offered to let me crash at her place. I took her up on the offer and took a 3 hour nap before waking up and hanging out with her and her cool daughter,Kayla.
Ok, I'm starting to get hungry so I'll add more to this later, there will be bourbons discussed and yummy fine-ish dining in Louisville. stay tuned...

I like how in practically every post I say how I am going to really get on top of cooking, and then I just don't.
Today was the leftovers of snowday 2008 and I had to get up early to make my way across town. I scurried down to the basement to grab my cross bike and my shoes that were still encrusted in mud from my last race a few weeks ago. I had to dip them in a bowl of warm water to clan them up, and this took the place of eating. I hit the ice laden roads-literally twice when I crashed, my neck, arms adn left hip/buttock region is sore and stiff. yee-haw. Still, it was kind of nice bikeiceskating to work, and having roads mostly devoid of vehicles.
I was actually making good time despite sometimes not even really pedaling, so I stopped in at Kettleman's for an egg/sausage/bagel sandwhich. They have great bagels, but the sandwhich things aren't the best, they look good but the taste doesn't really compare to what you could make at home.
When I arrived at work, on time!, my friend was brewinga french press of coffee up for her hubby and I, she only goes with decaf so that was awfully nice of her.
Later I took the little lass and her dog out for a snow stroll adn we hit up True Brew the one and only coffee shop in the Brooklyn neighborhood. Or at least the main Brookyln strip...I got a slice of banana bread and a cocoa. They were ok, but we really just needed a destination for our walk. Oh, I also got a hardboiled egg which was tough to peel.
When Samantha came home on he rlunch break she offered me some homemade banana bread that had been in the pantry, unbeknownst to me. It was delicious! We had it toasted with butter. Way better than what I had from the coffee shop. This is the second time in the semi recent past that I have ordered bb at a coffee shop only to be presented with homemade and superior bb soon after. the moral of the story? Don't buy banana bread. Unless your friends made it.
They had soem rice/vegetable concoction as well that I had a small bowlful of.
A cup of tea and several glasses of water, followed by crackers and 2 slices of provolone made up my afternoon snack. June had some blueberries, dried mango, sweet potato, and Cheerios. That girl loves Cheerios, its kind of ridiculous.
For dinner Samantha,Tom, June and I hit up the 5th Quadrant cos we were all starving and Samantha was giving em a mercy ride home due to the weather and the long hours we all put in. Tom and Samantha both got Zreubens, and I was tempted but refused t oorder the same thing so I got a portabello mushroom burger. We all had clam chowder as our side. It was good but didn't really tatse liek clam chowder. My "burger" was good but not neccesarily worth $8.5o, turned out dinner was free for me though, so that was nice. Tom and I had the seasonal C beer. C-sasonal? I dunno, it had soem dorky name like that. It was ok. June has some oyster crackers and a taste of a pickle, she seemed to like it and then made a really funny face like "what the hell?". She decided milk was really her best option and settled down long enough to nurse before trying to dance on the table top. Babies at the pub...watch out! We gave our table up to another family and friend with a baby and walked outside to see a man eating in the "heated" patio with his super cute puppy. Thats a good dog owner! I am dogsitting this week so I had to get over to the house to feed the dogs and hang out. The man of the house had made aloaf of rye bread and left it here for me so I had a slice with butter and a Bridgeport IPA. I'll make some rye toast in the morning with some eggs. That oughtta help start the day.

Well, I kind of got bored of my food blog, because it was more of a challenge than I was interested in. Most people making a food blog would choose only to highlight good food they made or had at a restaurant but I chose to chronicle all the food I ate. That became too taxing, if only because I really wasn't eating very interesting stuff and without internet access at all times I had to remember whatever the hell I ate.
Recently its been a lot of eggs, cos they are cheap. For breakfast I had some coffee that my friend/boss made and 2 fried eggs with a slice of swiss cheese nestled between two tortillas, doused with Tapatio sauce. It was edible, but really not that great.
My budget is low right now cos my roommates decided they didn't want "another" roommate and I'm getting the boot, oh the joys. Anyhow I have to save up to move so I can't afford to buy much more than the basics. I did splurge the other day and went to Miss Delta for some southernish food: meatloaf, mashed taters, mac n cheese,a Ninkasi IPA and hushpuppies. Mmmm, hushpuppies! Fried food is almost always good, but hushpuppies top my list of fried good things.
I made the mistake of having some bourbon followed by wine later on in the evening and that really didn't sit too well with my stomach, so I got to relive the dinner a few hours later. Somehow this didn't bother me enough to not eat my leftovers for breakfast the following day, as well as a scramble and some coffee. I tried a cafe au lait form Albine Press a little later but it started to make me feel queasy so I abandoned it and was a bit shaky until I had a beer at polo. I had one more and a cheeseburger later on whilst watching the Ravens/Redskins game. I called Teh Ravens to win, and they did. The first quarter was fun to wtach but then it slowed down and got kind of boring. Needing a bit more food I got one of those vegan wraps from the co-op, which tasted pretty bland, and an apple cider.
